Department of Environmental Health Services
The Department of Environmental Services is responsible for environment control, solid waste collection and disposal, and public sanitation.
The Department has undertaken an aggressive programme to expand and deliver improved services throughout the nation. Sub-divisional offices presently exist on the islands of Grand Bahama, Exuma, Abaco, Andros, Bimini and Eleuthera San Salvador, Inagua, Acklins, Crooked Island and Long Island.
Bulk Waste Collection Programme
The Bulk Waste Collection Programme covers all constituencies in New Providence. It has successfully removed tonnes of waste from various communities. The derelict vehicle removal programme has removed in excess of 5,000 vehicles.
Shanty Town Project
The Shanty Town Project has removed illegal structures that were a health hazard as well as an eyesore in the community. Removal and demolition works were completed in Gamble Heights, Joe Farrington Road, Sea Breeze Lane, Cow Pen Road, Milo Butler Highway and Abaco.
Vector Control Programme
The Vector Control Programme has addressed the need for rodent control in communities. Rodent control was undertaken in Downtown, Cable Beach and Montague Beach, and has resulted in a decrease in the rodent population in the specified areas. The Vector Control Unit also focuses on taking measures to address mosquito borne diseases.
